The traditional model of many businesses focus primarily on managing its core business area which is the manufacturing of its products. The existence of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in many companies is almost a given in all our business engagements. However, in recent times, many businesses are starting to realise that just keeping the data in their ERP system is not productive for them as the ERP is very transactional. This basically means that it records a transaction only after it is done. The business front then suffers with a lack of useful and timely information. While ERP facilitates the back office order fulfilment, it does not empower the frontline in engaging customers.
As such, businesses are starting to realise that they need to operationalise the data that they have and turn them into useful information for their frontline to capitalise on. It is therefore necessary to provide the frontline (sales and service personnel) with real-time end-to-end operational information and essential order taking ability. More importantly, management would be empowered with holistic business insights, allowing for more strategic decisions to be made.
